Salvage
by Francis Sparshott
After the wind rose the cargo shifted;
Even the stacked iron rolled in the hold, till the ship's
Starboard rail dipped and stayed under, screws
Turning in air. The crew taken off, the master stayed,
His duty and delight to save what could be saved.
Everything failed in the storm, power shorted,
Tow parted. Next week the freighter foundered
In sight of shore. The coastguard winched him off,
Captain to the last, who saved what could be saved.
